Meerkat Manor

Meerkat Manor is a documentary on the life of a group of Meerkats called the Whiskers. Led by new dominant female Rocket Dog, this is a fasinating tale about life in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. This show takes you through the ups and downs of these tiny little Meerkats, and I'm going to introduce them to you!

Meet The Whiskers

Flower-The leader and dominant female of the Whiskers. She was born in 2000. Flower is the main character of the show and is the mother of over 70 pups. She was fitted with a radio collar that allowed scientists and film crews to track the group's movements. Despite her toughness, Flower can be nurturing to her pups and the other gang members, but is equally capable of ruthlessness, all in the name of "survival of the fittest" In the episode Journey's End she is bitten by a Cape Cobra, and died and her daughter, Rocket Dog, took the lead role after she passed.

Zaphod-Flower's partner and the dominant male of the Whiskers. He is the largest member in the family and is a bit of a bruiser. His main duties are to scent mark their territory and mate with Flower. He replaced his brother, Youssarian, as dominant male. When Flower is ready to mate he stays very close to her to keep other males away from her, but mostly Youssarian. His mate, Flower, died and his daughter Rocket Dog took the lead role after she passed. Due to the loss of Flower, he has left his group and is now roving. However, he has returned and is the dominant male once again.

Youssarian-Zaphod's brother and sentry in the Whiskers. He is eight years old, and used to be the dominant male, until Zaphod took his place. Because of a scar across his left eye, it is thought that as a pup, he was picked up by a bird of prey, then dropped on his head. Later it was proven that he got his scar from Zaphod. He mated with some females from the rival group, the Lazuli. He is infamous for forcing burrow moves while babysitting the pups, and is described as having "social problems". He is responsible for the death of one of Mozart's pups during a burrow move. When Daisy had pups, he tried to help her rescue them, but failed. He also led the splinter group with Daisy. He is the father of Pancake's pups. In season 3, he has gone on an extended roving trip.

Tosca-Flower's rebellious daughter. She was initially evicted from the Whiskers for having pups and permanently for taking charge of the Splinters, the larger of the two groups created when the Whiskers temporarily split. The crew believed that the Splinter group would be permanent and fitted Tosca with a radio collar. It is said that she gave birth to Jogu, McMurphy, and De La Soul. It is assumed that she died during a harsh winter. She has not been seen since 2005.

Daisy-Troublesome daughter of Flower. She has a nervous disposition and was heard barking with no apparent reason when she was the dominant female of Splinters. During Mozart's last pregnancy, she was the victim of eviction by her sister, which is considered a very rare event in meerkat society. She ended up back in the Whiskers after Flower reasserted her dominance over Mozart. She was babysitting when the Zappa charged and she saved the pups, along with Colombus.

Shakespeare-A hero of a meerkat,and the courageous son of Flower. He survived a double bite, on his neck and leg, from a puff adder. He has not been seen since the episode The Calm Before the Storm, and is presumed dead, since his body was never found. The researchers stated that a male of his description was found outside the research area.

Rocket Dog-Rocket Dog is the new dominant female. Rocket Dog is most likely one of Kinkajou's littermates. She was known as Rocky in the early episodes. Rocket Dog became the dominant female when her mother, Flower, mysteriously disappears. When Flower returns, she again becomes a subordinate. But when Flower dies, she is dominant female of the Whiskers once again, but she faces trouble and confrontation from her sister Maybelline.

Rest of the Whiskers Family

Attila- an aggressive son of Zaphod and Flower. He notably led a charge against roving meerkat Grog from the Commandos, who approached the Whiskers' babysitting burrow to look for females in season 2. Even though he is very brave, he was afraid to fight a scorpion that was given by Mozart.

Achilles- from the same litter as Attila, Mango and Chutney. He fell into the watering hole and was soaked.

Apollo- He, Athena, Pepper, and Nutmeg are surviving members of Blossom's litter.

Athena- She was the only one who went back for Blossom when she was too scared to go hunt food with the adults.

Axle- a pup the Whiskers adopt after accidentally left behind from the Zappa.

Basil- from the same litter as Columbus, Parsley, and Rose.

Big Will- The son of Youssarian. He was born when Vialli, a female, and Youssarian were mates. He, along with Yousarrian and Mitch, wanted to mate with Lazuli females. He also tried to mate with some Gattaca females.

Bing- born in the same litter as Milley and Shelley and is the only male in the litter.

Blossom- a daughter of Flower. She wandered away in "Silent Fields" and was killed by a goshawk

Buster- a pup from the first litter of season 3.

Chutney- in the same litter with Attila, Achilles and Mango.

Clive- in the same litter as Dudley, Petra, and Marypat. He was separated from the rest of the group with only a few adults in season 1.

Colombus- the adventurous little pup, is another of Zaphod's sons. He went foraging with the adults the moment he saw sunlight. He helped babysit the pups and protect them from a Zappa raid.

Cruise- the sister of Mitch, Rocky, and Einstein. She is notoriously feisty.

Dudley- Clive, Petra, and are Flower's pups. They were separated from the Whiskers in the Season 1 episode Divided Loyalties.

Einstein- another of Zaphod's sons, is seen trying and failing to open a tortoise egg. He also tried to steal some plover's eggs from their nest when the birds were focusing on the rest of the Whiskers, but was unsuccessful. He is from the same litter as Mitch, Rocky, and Cruise.

Izzy- one of the pups from season 3. She is said to be always hungry.

Jogu- the 1-year-old son of Tosca. He and his brother McMurphy were babysitting Flower's pups, but wandered off when they got bored. Shakespeare was giving him a scorpion until Mitch stole it from him. He became an "adult male" when he mated with Melanie of the Zappa.

Kooky-one of the older females who went on sentry duty shortly before the Commandos attacked the smaller Whiskers splinter group.

Len- Squiggy's littermate.

Maybelline- Rocket Dog's sister. She causes trouble for her.

Mango- a female in the same litter with Attila, Achilles and Chutney. She was first to see a snake that was in the territory of the Whiskers.

Marypat- in same litter as Dudley. Marypat is not her real name, as there was a Marypat in the Commandos, a rival mob not yet mentioned.

McMurphy- a son from Tosca's first litter. In the episode Flower Power, McMurphy and Jogu were assigned to babysit Flower's pups, but due to their youth and inexperience, they lost interest and wandered off.

Milley- in same litter as Shelley and Bing.

Nutmeg- Blossom's sister.

Parsley- in the same litter as Columbus.

Pooky- one of Flower's sons. As a teenager, he saved one of Tosca's pups during the first burrow move which Youssarian initiated. He was seen trying to steal Flower's food, but failed.

Pozzo- Pozzo and Sparky followed their mother, Flower, when the Whiskers split up.

Pepper- in Blossom's litter.

Petra- in the same litter as Dudley.

Rose- in the same litter as Columbus.

Shelly- in the same litter as Milley.

Sparky- She and Pozzo followed their mother Flower when the Whiskers split up.

Sparkle- a pup from Mozart's first litter. She was killed after Youssarian started the second den move. Sophie and Spud are known surviving members of this litter.

Spud- a pup from Mozart's first litter.

Squiggy- a pup in season 3. He is Len's littermate and considerably more adventurous than Len. He has a deformed leg.

Suggs- a pup from the first litter of season 3.

Meet the Lazuli

Big Si-was the dominant male of the Lazuli. He was the biggest meerkat in the area. Shortly afterwards a fight in the Whiskers' burrow, he became very ill with tuberculosis and had to be put down at the beginning of season 2

Cazanna-is the dominant female of the Lazuli. She is unable to bear pups since Big Si died, as the new alpha male is her son, J.D. Meerkats generally do not mate with family. Like Flower, she has a radio collar.

Bubble-one of Big Si's last pups who was in the same litter as Squeak. She was killed in the attack by the Commandos.

J.D.-is Cazanna and Big Si's son. His achievement is that he succeeded becoming the alpha male of the Lazuli after his father died

Magnus-a large male meerkat who attempted to mate with Flower, but was chased off by the majority of Whiskers males.

Maralyn-a female member. She could not defend Bubble and Squeak because she was outnumbered by the Commandoes when they attacked while the rest of the Lazuli were away. She survived the attack but was badly injured.

Pancake-another Lazuli female. She once mated with Youssarian and had two pups. She was babysitting the two during a burrow raid by the Whiskers, but the Lazuli returned and forced the Whiskers to retreat.

Penny-is a Lazuli female. She was helping Pancake babysit her pups, but ran off when the Whiskers raided the burrow.

Squeak-was the smallest pup in the same litter as Bubble. He is Big Si's young son. He survived the Commando attack.

Meet the Commandos

Hannibal-the dominant male of the Commandos. Hannibal has one missing eye, and is the toughest meerkat in the Kalahari. He gave Carlos a scar on his face when they had a fight. Along with the rest of the Commandos, he appears in the episode Young Blood, but they are only shown as dark figures. He and the Commandos are not seen again until When Flower met Hannibal, United We Stand, and The Quiet Fields. He has been fitted with a radio collar.

Nikita-the dominant female of the Commandos. Along with the rest of the Commandos, she killed Lazuli pup Bubble in a raid on the Lazuli territory. She also killed Mozart's pups.

Ozzy-the son of Hannibal and Nikita. He was killed during a fight with the Whiskers after he lead a attack against Zaphod. Hannibal's eldest son.

Grog-a huge male member of the Commandos. He was the first one seen in Meerkat Manor belonging to the Commandos. He approached the Whiskers' babysitting burrow to look for females, but was chased by Mozart and Daisy. He also tried to mate with Pancake, but was driven off by Youssarian

Wilson-Hannibal's son. He has started roving and mated with Rocket Dog and Mozart before Mozart passed.

Meet the Zappa

Frank-is the dominant male, but he was getting too old for the job. He is later deposed by Houdini.

Lola-is the Zappa dominant female. Lola and her sister are the only two females in the Zappa.

Punk-is Lola's sister. Punk may have taken over when her sister Lola disppears, for she is the only other girl.

Houdini-Houdini is the new Casanova, after Carlos forms the Starsky with Mozart. He once went roving and Flower, the dominant female of the Whiskers gang, caught his eye. It is unknown whether they mated or not. He, along with Punk, may have took over the Zappa gang.

Melanie-a Zappa female. She was seen searching for her family around a burrow where Sophie and Jogu were watching over Flower's three pups. She later mated with Jogu.

Axle-a pup that the Whiskers adopt after being left behind accidentally.

Meet the Starsky

Carlos-once an avid rover, has finally settled down as the dominant male of the Starsky group. After mating with Kinkajou and Mozart, he leaves it to them to figure out who is the dominant female. He has a scar on his face from a fight with Hannibal. His scar is to infected to forage and later dies from starvation and infection.

Kinkajou-Mozart's half-sister. She seems to be the dominant female after killing Mozart's pups and leading the group foraging. After most of the group died of Illness, she dies during a cold night with Mozart.

Mozart-founded the group with roving male Carlos after being evicted from the Whiskers by matriarch Flower. She is no longer dominant female of the Starsky because her leadership role seems to have been stolen by half-sister Kinkajou after she mated with Carlos, lead the group foraging, and killed her pups. She saddly passed away by a passing Jackel after become the soul surviver of the Starsky

De La Soul-Tosca's grown up pup from another litter. She helped form the Starsky. She has not been mentioned yet

Shady- a male meerkat. He spotted a deadly snake.

Meerkat Manor Mob Game!

Here is where I shall begin. In the Kalahari Desert there are 2 rival mobs. The Sweet Peas, the Yotos, and
the Vikings. These rivals fight day after day for the one thing that matters most, territory. These groups have so many family secrets that it would take a scientist to figure out! If you would like your mob to show up on our webpage or you just want to join a mob yourself, contact Yelozo or any of our mob controllers.

Sweet Pea News and Updates
Nobody is begging for mercy these days, becides Deineira. Bella recently discovered the Yotos family attempting to steal Sweet Pea land, and called all Sweet Peas for battle. Since both families have a simular scent, they reconized eachother and came together as one large family. But the dominant role was on the line. Bella quickly asserted her position and throwing Deineira off guard, evicting her from the newly extended Sweet Peas forever.

BEWARE! Bella will evict females without telling them first. If you look down the list and it says "Currently Evicted" then I evicted you that day. Bella will soon let you back in when she feels you've learned your lesson! ( Or you start complaining about it!)

August 18, 2008 - The last three episodes of Meerkat Manor are coming out on the 22nd of this month!!

June 15, 2008 - Happy Father's Day! Thank your Dominant Male Day! WOOT! I just finished renovating the site a little bit so we're all cleaned out! Haha!

May 10, 2008- The movie about Flower is going to be released on May 25th and the 4th season of Meerkat Manor starts June 6th.

February 19, 2008-YIKES! I just noticed how far behind I am getting on this page!! Ahh! Well what can I say?? School, School, SCHOOL! You never get any free time anymore! Well whatever...Anyway...I have uploaded the Meerkat Manor Mob Game! Click on the link on the side for more info!

November 11, 2007- Today I'm going to be posting a Flower page in memory of my favorite meerkat. Check later for updates!

September 28, 2007- Unfortunatly, if anyone watched Meerkat Manor tonight, you have already found this out. Flower the dominant female of the Whiskers tragically died. She was bitten in the head from a Cape Cobra while trying to save her pups. Her memory will be cherished forever. I will soon be posting a video on Youtube about this dedicated dominant.

September 14, 2007-Sorry I haven't been on in awhile! School started the 4th and I've been extremely busy. Don't forget to watch Meerkat Manor tonight!! Ohh yeah The Meerkat Manor Season 3 list is back! YAY!

How Bella Met Torres; The Story Behind The Sweet Peas

It started as a beautiful day in the Kalahari desert. Bella's gang were up and about. Her mother Elizabeth was the dominant female of The Wintercrest. She had just given birth to a new litter. Bella was 1 and a half at the time. Elizabeth led the gang out to forage, not knowing that near by their foraging path,there was a rover watching their every move. This rover is named Torres. He had his eyes hooked on Bella. He tryed to get her attention,but is unsucessfull. On the other hand,Bella's sister Cloe,spots Torres and she seems interrested. She approaches him,but he pushes her away. He is in love,but not with her. He's in love with Bella! He seems not to get her attention. Then,he is spotted by the guards. They setts off after Torres and chases him away. Torres runs off into the bush while the guards walk back to the group. Elizabeth leads the group home. The next day,the gang are out foraging again. Torres id watching their every move. This time,he gets Bella's attention,but only for a minute. He's spotted by the guards again and they chases him off. Bella thinks:"Wow...That guy was gorgeous!I hope he'll be back...." and Elizabeth takes the gang home. The day after that,the gang is again out foraging. Torres is still around. Bella spotts him and sets of into the bush,without anyone notice. She finds Torres and Torres starts grooming her. She gladly accepts him and grooms him back.He approches her to mate and she accepts him, but then,they get spotted by Elizabeth and she chases Torres away. She gives Bella a tail-bite to show how angry she is. Bella doesn't care. All she can think about is Torres. "God,I'm in love!" She thinks and sets off for home. The next day,Bella is chosen to babysit for the day,so she won't run into Torres. "God,I hate my mom!" She thinks and lies down in the sand while her brother Emil are watching the pups underground. Suddenly,she spots a figure in the distanse. It's Torres. She runs up to him and grooms him. He grooms her back and approches her to mate. She accepts him. This time,they don't get disturbed. After they're done,Bella walks back to the burrow,where her family is back. Elizabeth smells Torres' sent on her and furiusly sent-marks her and gives her a tail-bite to show her dominance. Bella heads below ground with a bloody tail. The next day,Bella is left to babysit. The gang sets off,leaving Bella and Cloe to babysit. Again,Torres is back.Bella spotts him and sets of into the bush again. He approches her to mate,and she accept. Again,when they're done,she walks back to her burrow,finding the gang back home. Again,Elizabeth sent-marks her and gives her a tail-bite. Bella goes below ground thinking:"That was SOO worth it!" and falls asleep. The next morning,Elizabeth are first up.Then Bella makes an appearance. Her belly is bigger. Torres made her pregnant! Elizabeth notices and attacks her. Elizabeth bites Bella all over her body and evicts her. Forever. Bella runs of into the bush,where there's someone waiting for her. It's Torres. He's been waiting for her all night.He even found a burrow for them and a small territory. He grooms her and gives her a kiss. She grooms him back and together,they run of to forage.After a sucessfull foraging trip,Bella and Torres goes below ground for a good night sleep. The next morning,they go out to forage and are sucessfull. And the stories goes on and on....

Then,Bella is in labor.She gives birth to 3 healthy pups.2 girls and a boy. Rose,Angel and Skitty. They grew up to be healthy adults. They also had many other kids and now their the biggest and most close-nit families in the Kalahari.Torres and Bella are the most loving dominant pair in the desert. Bella still thinks about the time she met Torres. She married a bad guy and a guy that her mom didn't like."Doesn't matter...I love him...That's what count...Becides,he is GORGEOUS"That's what Bella told us.

Torres on the other hand said:"I'm the luckyest meerkat alive! I married the prettiest girl and greatest meerkat ever! I love her with all of my heart. I don't ever want to lose her. This is basically where Bella and Torres keep everybody posted on their expectations for everybody that is a member of the group.

Bella's Guidlines and Expectations
1. Subordinate Females are not allowed to reproduce. (If you do, I'll eat your babies)
2. Males are allowed to go roving at any time.
3. 2 Babysitters need to stay home if pups are born
4. Females need to check in twice a week
5. Males need to check in with Torres 2 times a week
6. FOLLOW BELLA'S RULES AT ALL TIMES!
7. If any of the group spots a female with a rover, she is immediently evicted until further notice.

Torres' Guidlines and Expectations
1.Males are free to go roving any time.
2.Males need to check in with me 2 times a week.
3.Females need to check in with Bella(<3) 2 times a week.
4.FOLLOW BELLA'S RULES AT ALL TIME!(If not,I'll take care of you)
5.If you try to take over my dominant male-role,I'll bite you.
6.If any male spots an rover,he's FORCED to chase him off!
7.If any of our members spots a male trying to mate with Bella(<3),that member will have to chase that male of or give me a notice that a male is trying to mate with her.If you don't do that,I'll kill you!

In Memory of Flower

We all loved her, but on September 28, 2007 our hearts were crushed and Meerkat Manor would never be the same. We learned that Flower Whiskers, the dominant female saddly passed on after a snake bite in attempt to save her precious pups. Here is my dedication to this loving meerkat.

In the winter season of 2000, a mother meerkat gave birth to some little baby meerkats. Even though it was winter they didn't have a very good chance at survival. But one of the babies was one meerkat that would change the way we looked at Meerkats forever, her name was Flower.

As life went on and she matured into a adult, she became evicted and her life was clinging by a thread. Until a roving male by the name of Youssarrian Vivan, stepped into her life. Together they became dominant pair of a group called, the Whiskers, who became exsistant in 1998.

As life went on, it changed for Flower and Youssarian. One day Youssarian's bigger brother Zaphod Vivan took Flower's heart away from Youssarian and together, Flower and Zaphod created one of the most tightly bonded groups of Meerkat history.

With the group numbers at almost 50, and after many tragic deaths and battles, the Whisker's hopes of a better world have never been so high, that is until one day in March.

After Flower's newest litter of pups arrived, the group heads foraging in the Kalahari sun and comes across their arch rivals, the Zappa. After beating them, Mitch, one of Flower's older kids comes across a Zappa pup and brings him to Flower. Amazingly, Flower accepts the pup and his name is Axle. After a new arrival joining the group they spot a deadly Cape Cobra. The group surrounds it to scare it. Successfully, their mobbing is successful and the group heads home, but something isn't right.

The group smells the same Cape Cobra in the burrow. The group starts to mob the burrow to lure the Cape Cobra out. Knowing her pups are inside the burrow, Flower charges into the burrow to save her pups, but it didn't go as planned.

Flower was bitten in the head by the Cape Cobra in an attempt to save her new pups. After two days of unbarrable pain, Flower finally let go on life.

She will always be remembered as the Meerkat who stood tall for her family as well as us. She stood brave against her foes such as the Lazuli, Commandos, and the Zappa. She was intelligant as well as faithful. She was never a quitter.

Cold Comfort A report that Big Si of the Lazuli had Tuberculosis and was put down to avoid a slow death.

Three Amigos Youssarian, Bill Will, and Mitch try to mate with Lazuli female, but were chased off.

Young Blood A group called the Commandos invade the Lazuli den and kill Bubble, a young pup.

Iron Lady Flower becomes pregnant and Mozart mates again and recieves a warning bite from Flower.

There's No Place Like Home Flower evicts Mozart again. Mozart becomes pregnant. Flower gives birth to 5 pups.

When Flower Met Hannibal Mozart miscarries her pups while alone. The Commandos attack the Whiskers to kill theres pups.

United We Stand The Whisker's win the battle. Ozzy of the Commandos dies in the battle and Mozart rejoins the group.

The Enemy Within Youssarian is left to babysit the pups, but abandons them to look for Lazuli females. The Whiskers and the Lazuli have a battle.

The Art of Leadership Flower moves the group to a den when an eagle owl is spotted in a bush.

Balance of Power Flower and Mozart are both pregnant. Mozart evicts Daisy, but Flower allows her back. Flower kills a bird due to her need of food.

Growing Pains Blossom explores too far into the dense grass and is killed by a goshawk.

The Godmother Flower has 3 pups as well as Mozart. Flower abandons Mozart when her pups emerge from the den.

The Quiet Fields Mozart has trouble caring for her pups and goes out foraging while the Commandos spot her den and kill her pups, Mozart rejoins the Whiskers with the Commandos in Whisker Territory.

Season 3

On Dangerous Ground	The Whisker's have trouble surviving in their new territory because they were evicted from their old manor by the Commandos.
The Mission	Flower puts on a search party to find her pups in the heart of Zappa territory. Mitch finds out that Mozart started her own group.
Sister Act	The Zappa raid the Whisker's burrow, but are chased off. At the Starsky, Kinkajou kills Mozart's pups, she is now the new dominant female.
The Death of Romance	Flower mates with Houdidi, a Zappa roving male because Zaphod let his guard off. At the Starsky, Carlos's scar is infected and later kills him.
The Tale of Len and Squiggy	Len and Squiggy are 3 weeks old and Flower and 10 other group members are missing and Rocket Dog takes over. Rocket Dog, Maybelline, and Daisy become pregnant. Len is killed by a goshawk and Squiggy is left behind because he couldn't find food for himself due to a deformed leg.
The House of Zappa	After being bitten from a puff adder, dominant female Lola makes her way back to the Zappa, but looses her dominance by Punk.
Heavy is the Crown	Rocket Dog's Group is going through starvation while Flower's group goes to their old territory to find food, but they run into the Commandos.
Journey's End	The Whiskers group rades a Cape Cobra from their territory and adopts Axle, a abandoned Zappa Pup. In a attempt to save her new little Flower is killed by the same Cobra.
A New Day	Rocket Dog is in power once more and attempts a burrow move, but Maybelline is refusing. Rocket Dog wins against her sister.
Farewell My Lovely	Zaphod leaves the group to go roving after 4 years as dominant male. He attempts to mate with Lola but is chased off by Houdini.
Three Degrees of Separation	At the Starsky, Kinkajou, De La Soul (UK) and Mozart are the remaining members of the group, De La Soul and Kinkajou both die and Mozart becomes a sould survivor.
The Graduate	Wilson mates with Rocket Dog and Mozart, Wilson and Mozart become separated and Mozart Dies from a Jackal attack.

What is the Anatomy of a Meerkat?

The Meerkat is part of the Mongoose family, weighting in on 1.61 pounds for males and 1.58 pounds for females. Its distinct figure is a little bit different from the Mongooses.Its long slender body and limbs give it a body length of 10 to 14 inches and an added tail length of 7 to 10 inches. Its tail is rather long and thin compared to the mongooses bushy tail. Meerkats use there tails as a balance device while standing up on two feet, they also use it to keep track of everybody in there family. The Meerkat's face tapers, coming to a point at the nose, which the natural color is brown. Their eyes are black as when as the patches around them. Like cats, Meerkats have "binocular vision" which allows them to see large ranges, and depth preception, and their own eyes. At the end of a Meerkat's "fingers" is a non-retractable, 2cm long, curved claw used for digging underground burrows, digging for prey and climbing trees. They have four toes on each foot. Their coats are usually colored fawn colored peppered gray, tan or brown with a silver tint. They also have short parallel line across their backs.

What Does a Meerkat Eat?

The Meerkat is an Insectivore, which is a carnivore that eats insects, but Meerkats also eat lizards, snakes, spiders, plants, eggs and small mammals. Because they cannot store excess body fat, foraging is a daily need. Meerkats forage in a group usually with one Meerkat on guard, looking out for predators and trespassing Meerkat mobs (Family) while the other Meerkats are foraging.

Meerkat Reproduction

Meerkats become sexually mature at about one year old and usually produce 3 pups per litter. Wild Meerkats usually hav e 4 litters per year. Most Meerkat births usually occur in the warmer seasons. The largest, most common amount of pups in a litter is 4. Gestation (carrying embryos till full term) lasts for about 11 weeks. When they are born, they are born in the underground burrow and are incapable of moving around. Their ears open at 15 days of age, eyes at 10-14, and then they are introduced to solid foods at 49-63 days of age. The pups are brought up from the burrow at 21 days and stay with a babysitter until they can go out foraging with the rest of the group. Usually, The Dominant male and female of a group have mating rights and will kill any offspring that isn't there's so their pups get the best start in life. They may also evict or kill the mother that produced the unwanted pups. Other Meerkat groups are formed usually by evicted females and roving males.

What is the behavior of a Meerkat?

Meerkats are very social. The usual Meerkat group hold up to 30 members. To strengthen their close family bond, they groom each other. The dominant pair usually scent mark the subordinates of the group to express their authority, and this is usually followed by the subordinates grooming the alphas and licking their faces. This behavior is also usually practiced when group members are reunited after a short period apart. Most meerkats in a group are all siblings and offspring of the dominant pair. When some Meerkats or the group are playing or foraging, there must be one or two adults on lookout for any dangers. When a danger is spotted, the Meerkat on lookout will give a loud warning bark and this signals the rest of the family to either flee the grounds in search of a bolt hole on their territory or to challenge the danger if its one of there own kind in a battle. Meerkats are also known to share their burrow with the Yellow Mongoose and ground squirrel, species with which they do not compete for resources. If they are unlucky, sometimes they share their burrow with snakes. Meerkats have been known to engage in social activities, including what appear to be wrestling matches and foot races.
It has recently been noted that meerkat calls may carry specific meanings, with specific calls alerting to the approach of snakes, birds of prey, or other predators. How these calls work is not clear.

It has also been noted that a researcher has witnessed Meerkats participating in some sort of singing ceremony.
